4th Annual Youth River Sports Day

Sunday, September 12, 2010
11 AM - 3 PM

Learn how rowing and paddling build healthy bodies and a healthy river at a fun, free event for youth, adults, families, and kids of all ages!

  • Ever wanted to know how to paddle a colorful dragon boat or an outrigger canoe?
  • How about learning to row?
Youth and adult participants can learn the basics of rowing and paddling and then head out on the river in safe and stable boats to try out their new skills.  Experienced rowers, paddlers, and coaches will make sure that everyone stays safe.

  • Looking for something more educational and less physical?  The Anacostia Watershed Society will also provide guided environmental river tours of the Anacostia River and discuss efforts to protect and restore the river.

  • Participants should plan to spend about two hours and to wear athletic clothing, socks and sneakers. Sunscreen, water bottles, and sunglasses are recommended if it is a sunny day.

Rowing and paddling are sports that many youth and adults have never tried, but these sports can be great alternate ways of getting fit and healthy.  Both sports support cardio fitness as well as build strength.  Rowing and paddling are also sports that both kids and adults can participate in for recreation and competition.

Event Coordinator Dan Early remarked, “Rowing and paddling are great forms of exercise, and they also build teamwork and camaraderie.  Crews learn really fast that you have to work together to move your boat.  If you don’t, you go nowhere fast.”  Both sports are also about building confidence. Early said, “you quickly figure out how you, as an individual, help your boat go.  Once you realize that ‘I did that!  I made the boat move!’ you start to understand that you can do almost anything. It’s a great feeling!”

Dan Early also commented that “Youth River Sports Day is a lot of fun, not only for our guests, but for the rowers and paddlers at the boathouse as well.  This is our chance to share our love for the river and our sports with kids and families in our neighborhood.  We hope that everyone can join us!”
