Hello Anacostia Community Boathouse Association Family,

Recent severe weather has truly brought to the foreground the “Community” aspect of ACBA. As calls echoed across our clubs on August 10th for help bailing boats and removing debris, dozens of rowers, paddlers, and coaches rallied, staying at the boathouse well into the night securing everything suddenly exposed to the elements by our missing roof. Luckily, no one was hurt during these events and our fleets incurred no major damage. We now call on this same community spirit to help replace the roof so that we can restore our facility to its normal functioning condition.

The Anacostia Community Boathouse Association board communicated with our insurance company, as well as with Clearspan, the company which manufactured and installed our original boathouse structure. Site inspections have confirmed that the metal framing which supports the tent material retains its strength and does not need to be repaired or replaced. The electrical system did suffer damage, and obviously the tent fabric needs to be replaced as well.

After considering the different options and costs, the ACBA board has voted to replace the tent fabric for the entire boathouse. This is a much more strategic option than just replacing the missing roof section. We do not want to have one section of roof that is new and one section that is eleven years old and prone to further damage. The board also voted to install Clearspan’s new “elite” fabric which is thicker and of higher quality than the “standard” fabric currently in place. This move will help to ensure a prolonged life for the entire roof over the coming years. The cost for the roof replacement, along with the electrical upgrades is $145,000. Luckily, our insurance policy has provided $65,000 of this total. This leaves us with the need to raise $80,000 to finish the project and stay within our 2021 Budget.

This is where you come in! We need everyone in the ACBA family to step forward and give to get our boathouse repaired and back in action. Every donation, no matter how large or small, will be critical in helping us reach our goal. It is vital that we repair the boathouse roof before winter to ensure that we can continue to have fun and healthy opportunities on the river.
